A very attractive and untouched Gallet chronograph from the 1950s. The 35mm stainless steel case features a thick, flat bezel that gives the watch a surprisingly wide and substantial presence on the wrist. Built as a true tool watch, even the chronograph seconds hand is filled with lume for improved visibility.
The case itself is particularly interesting. Known as the “Clamshell,” the construction was patented in 1936 by Schmitz Frères & Cie of Grenchen, with Gallet acquiring the rights shortly after. Four screws positioned behind the lugs clamp the upper and lower sections of the case together, creating a tight seal and making it one of the pioneering solutions for water-resistant chronographs.
A great piece of mid-century tool-watch history, preserved in untouched condition.
Condition & Specifications:
The 35mm stainless steel case is unpolished, showing minor wear and a very even profile. The bezel shows a minor scratch at 7 o’clock. The dial displays a lighter tone toward the center, gradually transitioning to a warmer yellow tone around the edges. The radium-filled hour markers and hands are in great condition. The watch has been serviced and is running accurately. A 48-hour inspection period is provided.
